Bioplastics, essentially derived from biogenic substances, can often not be distinguished externally from conventional plastics. Since bioplastics are not a uniform group of polymers, but a family, it is convenient to classify bioplastics according to their applications into biobased (raw material source), biodegradable (functionality) and biocompatible (compatibility). The differences in the chemical structure of bioplastics can be considered as an advantage or disadvantage, depending on the material requirements of the product. For example, biofilms have proved more than once to be very advantageous for food packaging. But of course, polyethylene film (PE) from bioethanol shows comparable molecular weight and additives as conventional PE of petroleum-based production.

In the diagrams below, you will find a comparison of Young’s modulus between selected bioplastics and standard commercial plastics.
